Fix: Google Nest Notifications Not Working On Android Smartphones

Google Nest notifications have stopped working for many Android 14 and 13 based Smartphones. However ,Older models have also been affected by this issue.

If your device is also not receiving Google Next notifications, worry not. I’ve curated a list of effective solutions for you to resolve this issue.

The Google Nest app is gradually phasing out. Although not officially confirmed, Google’s smart home efforts toward the Google Home app suggest it. The tech giant is working towards easy switching from the Nest app to the Google Home app.

No need to panic right now, as Google Nest is not being discontinued anytime soon, but we might see it happening in the future. For now, let’s shift our focus to fixing the Nest app notifications issues on your Android Smartphones

8 Ways to Fix Google Next Notifications Not Working

1. Check App Permissions
2. Check Nest Notifications Settings
3. Disable and Re-Enable the Notification Permission
4. Check Your Internet Connection
5. Clear the Nest App Data
6. Disable Data Saver Mode
7. Disable Battery Optimizations for the Nest App
8. Update Your phone and the Nest App

Many users got into trouble after upgrading to Latest Android Version. But the older models, too, are not entirely bug-free. According to the complaints, the Nest app won’t send doorbell notifications or when the smoke detector goes off.

Clearly, it’s challenging to live with Google Nest notification problems. Unless there’s a serious bug, one of the below solutions should resolve it.

1. Check App Permissions

The Nest app isn’t sending notifications on your phone, probably because you haven’t allowed the app to do so. You need to allow the app to send notifications.

To ensure the Next app has essential permissions on your phone, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Settings app.
  2. Tap on Apps.
  3. Find the Nest app in the app list and tap on it,
  4. Click Notifications.
  5. Ensure the toggle for All Nest notification, if not already.

If the Nest app already has the notifications permission, go through the notification categories to make sure you aren’t blocking the essential ones.

2. Check Nest Notifications Settings

The Nest app also lets you manage notifications for connected devices. So, if you’re not getting Nest notifications on your phone, ensure the notifications are not disabled within the app.

  1. Launch the Nest app on your device
  2. Tap on the Settings icon in the top-right corner of the screen.
  3. Click Notifications.
  4. Make sure the Disable all notifications option is turned off.

If you are not receiving notifications from a specific device, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Nest app.
  2. Tap the Settings icon and click Notifications.
  3. Select your device.

Make sure the notifications are not disabled.

3. Disable and Re-Enable the Notification Permission

Although Google hasn’t acknowledged the issue (as I write this post), we have a few troubleshooting steps from a Nest community specialist.

The first troubleshooting approach he mentioned requires disabling and re-enabling notification permissions from the Settings app.

  1. Go to the Settings app.
  2. Tap on Apps.
  3. Find the Nest app in the app list and tap on it,
  4. Click Notifications.
  5. Toggle off All Nest Notifications and toggle it on again.

The second workaround shared by the community specialist includes turning off the Nest app notification (via the Settings app) and re-enabling it after waiting for 60 seconds.

Try these easy workarounds, and let me know if they help you resolve the notification issues on your phone.

4. Check Your Internet Connection

Notifications from your Nest devices are sent to your phone via the Google Cloud Messaging (GCM) service. For this service to function correctly, your Nest device and the device should have a stable internet connection.

To check if your Nest device has a good internet connection, connect your phone to the same router and run multiple internet speed tests. Analyze the results to check if your connection has speed or stability problems.

If you use a different network on your phone, check the network for any issues.

Reboot your router once, as it can improve your connection speed and stability.

5. Clear the Nest App Data

Corrupted Nest app data and cache can result in notification problems on your phone. To rule out this possibility, clear the Nest app data.

Before I tell you the steps, let me remind you that clearing the app data removes all the app data. You’ll need to set up the Nest app again.

  1. Go to the Settings app on your device
  2. Tap on Apps and click All Apps.
  3. Select Nest from the app list.
  4. Tap on Storage and Cache.
  5. Click Clear storage and tap on Delete.

During the Nest app setup, you’ll be asked to give the notifications permission. Click Allow. You should now receive all Nest notifications on your phone.

6. Disable Data Saver Mode

If Data Saver is activated on your phone, the device can reduce data usage for apps in the background. The Nest app requires constant access to the internet to send you real-time notifications, but the Data Saver option can limit its background data usage. Hence, you should disable this option.

To disable Data Saver on your phone, go to Settings -> Network & internet -> Data Saver and disable the toggle for Use Data Saver.

7. Disable Battery Optimizations for the Nest App

If battery optimizations are enabled for the Nest app, your smartphone can reduce its background activity to save the battery. If the app isn’t running in the background, it won’t send you notifications (at least timely).

You must ensure that the Nest app is allowed to run in the background. In other words, you should disable battery optimizations for the app.

  1. Open the Settings app on your phone
  2. Scroll down to Apps and tap on it.
  3. Find the Nest app in the list and tap on it.
  4. Click Battery.
  5. Under Managed battery usage, tap on Optimized.
  6. Toggle off the Optimized option.

8. Update Your phone and the Nest App

If you have tried the above solutions but to no avail, your device could be affected by a software bug. The bug could be present in the Nest app or your Device’s software.

  1. Updating the Nest app and your phone could resolve the issue, as the developers regularly push new updates to resolve bugs and improve the experience.
  2. To update the Nest app, go to the Google Play Store, search for the Nest app, and hit the Update button. If an update is unavailable, check back again in a few days.
  3. To update your smartphone, navigate to Settings -> System -> Software update and click Check for update. Make sure your device is connected to a stable network before downloading the update.

Wrapping It Up

If your phone is not sending notifications for the Google Nest, there are several ways to troubleshoot the problem. Begin by checking the notification permission for the Google Nest app and the notification settings within the Nest app. Try other solutions if the problem persists. If the solutions do not help, reach out to Google Nest support for further assistance.
